Lwalid Mimoun, The legend

Lwalid Mimoun

Lwalid Mimoun was born in 1959 in Aït Sidel, a Rifian Village in the northern part of Morocco, in a modest family. His first contact with music was with the flute “Tamja”, which led him to discover the richness of his local culture.

Concerned with the cause of the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized, Mimoun, throughout his artistic journey, has managed to compile an important collection of songs in which he tackled these social issues.
In 1980, he released his first album Ajjaj (thunder), which witnessed immediate success. The Moroccan government, fearing his growing popularity, banned the album which was being sold secretly. After participating in an unauthorized demonstration, Mimoun El Walid was imprisoned and then expelled from the university.
After crossing the desert, Mimoun returns to the limelight in 1986 with Ametluâ (the wanderer) and ten years later, with Tayyut (haze).
Forced to leave his native soil, like many of his countrymen, he settled in the Netherlands in 1991. The nostalgia came over again and returned to Morocco in 1994. Faced with the bitter reality, his destiny drove him to take the path of exile and settle in Belgium where he became the singer-poet of his immigrant community.
Mimoun El Walid is also a poet and novelist. He published his first collection of nouvels in ndederlans in In 1997 “Tinfardjas: Tinfas Tiqudain”.
