Tinariwen, the band of dislocated Saharan nomads pounding out badass desert blues, is preparing to release its fifth full-length album and continue a nomadic lifestyle on a North American tour this fall. The album, Tassili, drops August 30 on Anti- and features the work of TV On The Radio‘s Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and the horns of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Minus the input from guest musicians, Tassili was recorded in the Southeast Algerian desert.
Starting with the OohLaLA Festival in L.A. September 30, Tinariwen will be wandering the American heartland to spread the fruits of nearly 30 years of producing African desert rebel rock—which must be a welcome change from wandering the Sahara Desert as a result of political strife. While the blockhead brothers of Kings Of Leon were fighting over Legos, the founding members of Tinariwen were making music that was suppressed by the Malian and Algerian governments. That doesn’t mean Tinariwen’s music is better than Kings Of Leon’s, but it is anyway. For proof, check below for tour dates and catch the band live this fall, performing without onstage meltdowns.
